Handlers

There are many chores that have to be done even before we get a chance to stand on the sled runners, and with Trail Dancer being a long-distance racing kennel, there  is even more work and preparation  in order to get a competitive team to the start line of the many races entered each year.  There's always too much work for one person, that's for sure!

Team Trail Dancer is proud to have volunteers (i.e.," HANDLERS") to help with the many additional tasks. Some of these tasks are:
  • Scooping the dog yard
  • Watering and feeding dogs
  • Harnessing and unharnessing
  • Food preparation
  • Equipment  maintanence
  • Driving the dog truck
  • Mushing a second team (ok, the most fun part!)
  • Picking up dropped dogs at race checkpoints
The list goes on . . .

This help is an invaluable asset and play’s  a crucial part in Team Trail Dancer reaching the goals that have been set. If you are interested in handling for us, contact Gavin at traildancer@igs.net

Dom
Dom - You can see the dogs sure trust him!
My name is Dominic Parisien. I’m a French Canadian, born and raised
in Eastern Ontario, Canada.   I am employed as an Investigator with the
Office of the Veterans Ombudsman in the national capital region.  I also served in the Canadian Armed Forces as well as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in western Canada.   Through the years, I had the opportunity to befriend and observe many experienced dog man including Larry ‘Cowboy’ Smith, Doug Harris, John Douglas, Craig Houghton and Martin Massicotte.   I’ve also volunteered my time with the Caledonia Classic Sled Dog Race in Fort St. James, BC manning a remote checkpoint and also operated my own kennel of Siberian Huskies in western Canada.

I would like to race the Yukon Quest at some point in this lifetime.
Having had a working kennel before, I appreciate the time, money and
energy required to get a competitive team to the start line.  I want to
help Gavin achieve his goals and learn more about racing sled dogs
behind the scene.   I also like dog people, so I am looking forward to
meeting the folks on the race circuit this winter again.  I’m a country music fan and will enjoy annoying Gavin on the long drives to Michigan and Maine playing my George Strait, Johnny Cash and Alan Jackson CD’s in his truck.

Alec
Alec
My name is Alex and I'm the rookie on the team !

I'm born and raised in Ottawa and have lived here all my life. This will be my first year handling and also running my own small recreational team made up of my 3 dogs (Magic and Kita the huskies and Daisy a very enthusiastic little sheepdog who runs lead) as well as friends' dogs who need some exercise .

In the summer, I race and coach triathlons. I have finished longer races like the Ironman and I competed for Team Canada at Sprint Worlds in Australia this past summer.

I love a challenge, and after watching the Iditarod last winter on the Discovery Channel my interest was piqued, so I went out and tried dog sledding. After that one excursion it was game over for me - I was hooked. I wanted to run the Iditarod. Along came a new siberian to add to the household and a dogsled in the garage. I'm hoping that some of my own racing experiences will come in handy in this new sport !

I'm looking forward to learning all I can this winter from Gavin  and  Dom . The Iditarod is still very much a pipe dream at this point, but all dreams have to start somewhere !
